Anna Kirkman, 19, has been creating music for as long as she can remember. She grew up in Brisbane, surrounded by creative and musical influences from her parents and three siblings and has probably been singing longer than she has been talking. She started playing piano at age 4, taught herself the guitar at 12, and has discovered a love for many other instruments along the way. At the mere age of 6 years old, Anna composed her first song entitled “Mosquitoes in My Bed” and her songwriting skills have been growing and evolving ever since.

She has trained diligently as vocalist, through solo tuition since 2012 and as a member of various ensembles in the Queensland Show Choir since 2010. Anna has completed her Grade 6 AMEB Piano Exam and is now working towards Grade 8. Currently studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Music) at the University of Technology, Anna is excited to be expanding and developing her skills and experiences every day. Following her undergraduate degree, Anna hopes to complete a Master of Music Therapy, with the goal to help patients manage and overcome mental health struggles through the therapeutic power of music.

Anna loves to perform and is always looking for new opportunities to share her music with the world, while also collaborating with and supporting others. Her passion for acting and theatre also feed into her musical endeavours, as she writes music with the intent to connect with her audiences on a personal level. Over a decade of dancing and theatre training helped to prepare Anna for her musical theatre debut in 2015 as Amber Von Tussel in Cannon Hill Anglican College’s production of Hairspray. In 2017, Anna played a fundamental role in writing the script and music for Invisible Theatre Company’s production of TBC: The Basement Collective, and performed a lead role of Scarlet. Through her involvement triple j unearthed, Anna placed 13th in the electronic music charts for her 2013 collaboration of Stairwell with Golden Vessel, and received airplay for her own composition, The Fall. She has been the recipient of various awards at the Queensland Show Choir’s President’s Trophy Night since 2012.

Driven by her love for music and the invaluable ways it can influence a person’s experiences, mental cognition, emotional outlook and overall quality of life, Anna cannot wait to see where the future takes her.
